Sabbaticals play a vital part in maintaining the spiritual health of Christian leaders and enriching and sustaining their leadership. That is the conviction behind this toolkit. Living Leadership Associate Richard Underwood puts it like this:
"By setting aside a few months for sabbath rest we are able to dramatically disconnect from life and work as usual and bring ourselves more fully to God and his call upon our lives."
For this to happen, a leader needs to be released; that is, given permission and support by others in the church or organisation so that the sabbatical season can be guilt-free and well-resourced. This toolkit was written to help organisations and churches to do this.
This toolkit includes:
- An Introduction explaining what sabbaticals are, their biblical basis and why they are beneficial for Christian leaders.
- Six chapters exploring six aims of a sabbatical. Each includes some reflections to get you thinking, a summary of practicalities to consider and a set of questions for you to engage with alone and with your family and/or fellow leaders.
- A chapter on the church or organisation on sabbatical, helping you think about the benefits of a leader’s sabbatical for the church or organisation and what it may mean for everyone to be on sabbatical.
- A chapter on sabbatical policies, helping you think about what they should include.
- An appendix aimed at helping you develop a healthy regular rhythm in ministry.
